XV Competition diary: 16 June

Auditions of Round I piano performances began at the Moscow Conservatory on June 16th. Eight musicians appeared on the stage of the Great Hall for the first day of the Competition. Four Russians led off the auditions: Nikita Abrosimov, Yuri Favorin, Sergey Redkin, and Andrey Gugnin. Following an intermission, the Competition resumed at 7pm with Alexander Ullman (the United Kingdom), Asiya Korepanova (Russia), Mario Mazo (Germany), and Emanuel Rimoldi (Italy). Six of the competitors played the Steinway piano. Sergey Redkin chose the Yamaha piano, and Mario Mazo favoured the instrument by Fazioli. The programme in Round I includes a prelude and fugue by Bach (from Book I or II of “The Well-Tempered Clavier"), a classical sonata (seven of the competitors chose one by Beethoven, while Emanuel Rimoldi played Mozart), one or more pieces by Tchaikovsky, and also one étude by either Chopin, Liszt, or Rachmaninov. The auditions lasted about ten hours including the intermissions. All the performances were streamed live at the website of Competition partner medici.tv (http://tch15.medici.tv). After these streaming broadcasts end, a recording of the Competition performances will be kept on medici.tv websites and apps so that they may be enjoyed free of charge. Until the next Tchaikovsky Competition they will be available for the appreciation of music lovers anywhere in the world via any device that connects to the internet, including smartphones, tablets, Chromecast, computers, and Smart TV. On June 17th auditions in Round I will continue. Starting at 1pm the afternoon session will feature Mikhail Berestnev (1:00 pm), Jeun Beum Sohn (2:40 pm), Moye Chen (3:50 pm) and Andrey Dubov (4:40 pm).
