Tonight, at 19.00, a grandiose concert announcing the grand opening of the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition was held in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre was headed by Valery Gergiev, a Co-chair of the Organizing Committee of the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition.

“It is my sincere pleasure to welcome the participants and guests of the XVII International Competition named after Tchaikovsky, a leading classical music event. Today I recall the very first competition which took place in 1958, where an absolutely brilliant appearance of historical value was made by Van Cliburn. I believe that the young talents of today will succeed in being the middle link for nations to perceive one another.

We are willing to guarantee for millions of performers the possibility to come into the spotlight through performances and winning at the Tchaikovsky Competition. I hope that in an environment of full focus on music, out of behind-the-scenes politics, we will manage to create a promise for young people to bring talent to light to the full extent.

I would like to wish tremendous progress to the contestants. Even to those of them who will not be gold or other medalists. Yet, they will work their way up, one shall speak, think of them, shall look forward to seeing them, and every subsequent appearance in public will be attended with impatience because they made a name for theirselves within our renowned competition.

See you at the Mariinsky theatre and at other venues in Saint Petersburg and Moscow within the confines of the competition for the best young musicians around the globe. I wish you inspiration and further creative success!”, said Valery Gergiev, the Co-chair of the Organizing Committee of the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition.
