In the 1990s, the Tchaikovsky Competition was nearly expelled from the Association of Music Competitions due to non-payment of a fee of several hundred dollars. But we had the most important thing: the brand “the winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition”. I remember how at two o’clock in the morning Andrey Yakovlevich Eshpai stepped onto the stage of the Conservatory Great Hall and so calmly and simply said: “The first place goes to Denis Matsuev.” And I calmly answered him: “Thank you.” Everyone began to congratulate me, and we immediately, at night, went to play football. It was a great time!
